SECRETS OF THE DOJO - Observations of Confidence

Confidence is defined as a “belief in one's own abilities; self-assurance.” Most human beings are not born with confidence; it’s a learned behavior that comes with exposure to situations and circumstances that teach the individual that they can handle themselves in life. Life is a good teacher, but a person’s life experiences can be helped along. Martial arts instruction is a wonderful activity for children and adults to gain confidence by testing physical and mental abilities in ever increasing levels training.

In particular, self-defense martial arts puts the student in stressful but safe simulated danger situations such as bullying, robbery, or personal assault. The student’s self-defense knowledge is tested regularly and confidence is gained through experience. Time in the dojo teaches students self-reliance and responsibility. As confidence grows self-esteem blossoms. Self-Esteem is a key life skill that insures that a person is prepared to be successful in all their endeavors.

As confidence is a learned skill, it is best taught from an early age. It only takes one negative experience in a young child’s life to hamper the development of self-confidence. A positive, nurturing environment is required develop and to repair damaged self-confidence, and what can be destroyed in an instant will take many months to repair. The dojo can be such an environment. Seek a school where the students display confidence without being arrogant. Speak with the instructor inquiring how their school will empower your child. Talk to other students and parents of students to hear their success stories. If you like what you see and hear enroll!

Many schools will have some kind of feedback or progress report system in-place to let you know how your child is doing. Instructors welcome your inquiries about your child, don’t be shy in speaking with them.

Master Timothy R. Loomis and the teaching staff of The Silent Mind, a Twinsburg Ohio martial art school, can relay many success stories from his 53 plus years teaching martial arts to people of all ages. Here’s just one example of a happy parent’s and child’s experience.

"I wanted to take a moment to recognize Sensei Tim Loomis and The Silent Mind for the changes I have seen in my son who is 11 years old. He was in dire need of self-confidence and discipline before he started to take classes. I discussed these issues with Sensei Tim and he assured me that this would help. I am here to say that in just 8 months of being a part of The Silent Mind I have seen dramatic improvements in both areas as well as his school work. Thank you for making a big difference in my son’s life." – Gib Pallay
